A breakthrough at Cornell University led to the discovery of the novel harpin protein that activates a plant’s own natural defense systems. Through decades of research, we transformed this discovery into a new category of plant defense activator technologies, now expanded into proprietary Harpin⍺β®-based solutions targeted for key crop threats.

1991

Scientists at Cornell University identify harpin, a protein linked to activation of natural plant defense and growth responses.

1992

The discovery is published in the journal Science, establishing the scientific basis for further development.

2000

After nine years of research and field trials, the first commercial harpin product, Messenger®, is launched.

2005-2024

Continued research and field development expand the platform with:

  • A patented disease protection technology platform.
  • A patented nematode protection technology platform.

Defense Activators work through the plant, helping crops prepare, respond, and perform under pressure. Our Defense Activator technologies are uniquely designed to protect crops differently than traditional crop protection tools.

Plant-powered

Instead of acting on the pest or disease, they work through the plant itself, helping it recognize pressure early and respond more effectively above and below ground.

Targeted response

The science is rooted in highly specific peptide-based technologies that activate targeted responses in a plant. What farmers see is stronger crop resilience and more consistent performance under field pressure.

How it works

  1. PLANT RECOGNITION

    The plant recognizes our proprietary protein or peptide-based technology when it's applied.

  2. Defense Signals

    A variety of signals are triggered in the plant.

  3. Defense Pathways

    The plant activates its own defense pathways, through mechanisms such as systemic acquired resistance (SAR), a whole-plant response that helps prepares tissues for pressure.

  4. Stronger Response

    The plant is prepared to respond when a threat occurs, supporting tolerance to specific stresses and improved vigor and growth.
